Senator Bill Stachowski Coordinates Erie County Farm Bureau Surplus Plants To Be Used By BMHA for Community Gardens
13 Jun 2008
State Senator Bill Stachowski (D 58th) today coordinated the delivery of approximately one hundred flats of flowers and vegetable plants from the
Erie County Farm Bureau
to be used by the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority for community gardens. Senator Stachowski had the plants delivered to the BMHA headquarters at 300 Perry Street at 11 AM this morning, June 13th. Dawn Sanders, Executive Director of the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority, was on hand to accept the plants. Workers and volunteers from AmeriCorps and Grass Roots Gardens were present to plant the flowers at the Perry Street location.
A believer in utilizing the varied resources of his 58th District, Senator Stachowski had discussed this concept with well known Eden farmer Paul Zittel this spring. “My District includes some of the urban areas of Buffalo as well as the suburbs and the agricultural rich south towns,” said Stachowski. “In an effort to bring the two together I approached the Erie County Farm Bureau to see if their surplus flowers and vegetable plants could be put to good use in the city of Buffalo. The Farm Bureau agreed and we coordinated with the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority to use the plants to create community gardens at some of their locations, becoming a win-win for everyone,” added Stachowski.
The Erie County Farm Bureau had the surplus plants delivered to Agle’s Farm Market, 7952 Gowanda State Road in Eden. Bob Bukowski, Director of Technical Operations for the BMHA, had the plants trucked from Agle’s and Zittel’s farm to the main office at 300 Perry Street.
